International Asperger's Day

In 2007 Asperger Services Australia initiated the celebration of the anniversary of Dr. Hans Asperger's birth -- February 18 -- as International Asperger's Day. International Asperger's Day is observed with events around the world. Some organizations organize and host conferences on that day. On February 18, 2007 the Asperger Adults of Greater Washington commemorated Dr. Asperger's birth with a special dinner at the America Restaurant in Union Station. International Asperger's Day activities are planned and announced on an e-mail group. Communication on the e-mail group is in English, Spanish and French. International Asperger's Day

International Asperger's Day grew out of the celebration of 2006 -- the centenary of Dr. Asperger's birth -- as International Asperger's Year. That event was proposed by the Asperger Adults of Greater Washington.

Thirty-nine Asperger and autism organizations from 22 countries on six continents marked 2006 as International Asperger's Year. There were conferences and seminars in France, Australia, Japan, Argentina and the United States, as well as international Asperger's Syndrome congresses in Spain and Portugal. A San Francisco autism and Asperger organization, AASCEND, even marked International Asperger's Year with a six-day 100-km (62-mile) ski trek through the High Sierras of California!
